Issue 16 - AUGUST 2023
The female urinary-reproductive intricate systems can sometimes affect bladder control challenges like overactive bladder, neurogenic bladder, and urinary incontinence. These issues affect 42% of women of all ages. However, embarrassment often deters seeking help. Dr. Zaki Almallah, a Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi Staff Physician, discusses these problems, emphasizing available treatments.
The most common bladder issues for women are overreactive bladder, neurogenic bladder damage, urinary incontinence as well as emotional strain and psychological implications triggered by bladder control.
Treatment plans for bladder control conditions, including urinary incontinence and overactive bladder, depend on factors like the type of incontinence, its impact on a woman's life, and her comfort with different treatments. These conditions can significantly affect a woman's life, so early intervention, understanding their causes, and exploring treatment options are crucial for regaining control and well-being. Options include medications and beneficial lifestyle changes such as maintaining a healthy weight, Kegel exercises, and bladder training. In more severe cases, invasive treatments like injections or surgeries may be recommended.
Lung cancer is a prevalent and aggressive disease. Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s, Lung Cancer Program employs advanced techniques to diagnose and treat the disease. Offering routine screening for individuals at increased risk, such as those with a history of tobacco use, to detect the disease early for effective treatment.
Screening involves a painless low-dose CT scan, which swiftly captures detailed images of the lungs. Patients are asked to wear a hospital gown and remove any metal or jewellery. CT scans have proven efficacy in reducing lung cancer-related mortality.
The lung cancer often has no symptoms until it is at an advanced stage, when survival rates are lower. If caught early, it has a much higher chance of being cured. The best way to detect lung cancer early is through routine screening.
Hussena's life took a perilous turn when she confronted a rare and life-threatening condition, pulmonary hypertension, in 2008. Her health deteriorated as she grappled with distressing symptoms, including breathlessness and severe chest pain. This condition, which exerts undue pressure on the lungs by affecting the heart's blood vessels, led to right heart failure (RHF).
Hussena's condition rapidly deteriorated and, her daily life became a struggle, relying on oxygen even for sleep. Her last hope lay in a lung transplant, as conventional treatments offered no relief. Thankfully, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi's Transplant Center swiftly initiated preparations for the complex procedure and identified a suitable donor.
The 10-hour surgery, involving the support of a heart-lung bypass machine and a dedicated multidisciplinary team, was arduous, especially considering Hussena's compromised heart and lung functions. However, it marked a turning point in her life. Following the surgery, her major organs showed remarkable improvement, and she emerged from the experience with profound gratitude towards an anonymous donor who gifted her a second chance at life.
What makes this story even more remarkable is the donor's unparalleled act of selflessness, extending beyond the lung donation to include their liver, kidneys, and various other organs, ultimately saving multiple lives through their generous gift.
