Complex Case to Save Mother and Unborn Baby

Doctors describe Michelle’s case as nothing short of a miracle. In a critical condition – six months pregnant, with respiratory complications and in need of heart surgery – medical teams came together in a race to save her, and her unborn baby’s lives.

Michelle, a 33-year-old mother of one, began suffering from a respiratory illness and her health began to deteriorate rapidly. She was taken to a maternity hospital where she was diagnosed with mitral valve stenosis – a life-threatening heart condition that required surgery. She was brought to Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi in a critical condition, unresponsive and in a coma.

Michelle was six months pregnant with her second child at the time, making her situation even more worrying. Doctors describe Michelle’s case as one of the most complex they have ever seen. They knew that without treatment, Michelle, and her baby, only had a couple of hours to live.

Lung Cancer Awareness Month

This November, on Lung Cancer Awareness Month, we encourage everyone, smokers, and non-smokers, to get screened for lung cancer. Lung cancer is one of the most complex and aggressive forms of cancer and exposure to second-hand smoke or having a family history of the disease can put you at risk.

Globally, the disease causes more deaths than any other cancer in both men and women. Smokers are particularly at risk, with 85% of all cases of lung cancer linked to smoking and tobacco use.

Could You be at Risk?
  • Are you aged between 50 and 75?
  • Do you smoke or who have quit smoking within the past 15 years?
  • Have you smoked at least one packet a day for more than 30 years?
  • Have you smoked Medwakh or Sheesha for more than 20 years?

If you answered yes to two or more of these questions, you are considered at-risk for lung cancer and routine screening is recommended.

Lung cancer screening saves lives. If you are at risk, book yours today.

World Diabetes Day, 14 November

In November, we celebrated World Diabetes Day. We have all heard of diabetes, and you probably know someone who has it. In fact, in the UAE, it is estimated that as many as 1 in 5 people have the condition, with the number expected to double by 2040

What is diabetes?

When we eat food, our body breaks it down and the sugar (glucose) enters our blood stream. A hormone called insulin helps the cells in our body absorb this sugar, so they can convert it to energy. People with diabetes don’t produce insulin, or it doesn’t work properly, so the glucose stays in the blood and the blood sugar level increases. Over a period of time, this can cause damage to many of the body’s organs

Diabetes can cause tiredness, blurred vision, feeling thirsty, frequent urination, weight loss, dry mouth, frequent infections, numbness in the feet and hands. It can be diagnosed with simple non-invasive testing by your doctor.

Diabetes is a serious health concern, so if you think you are at risk, talk to your doctor. Early diagnosis will mean that the condition can be managed properly and, when supported by healthy lifestyle changes, the risk of long-term complications is reduced.
